Getting Back to Basics after the Summer Break: Hygge Home Cleaning

Today on the blog we’re getting back to basics after the summer break with some simple, no-fuss cleaning! (Did you see me on YouTube yesterday? I’m back with weekly videos, woo hoo!) Do you dread cleaning the bathroom? Ha ha, it doesn’t have to be that way! With Flylady Zone 3 – the bathroom – we’re keeping it short, sweet, and manageable. And I’ve got plenty of inspiration for you!

A vintage black and white image of a woman screaming with a shocked expression, set against a bright pink background with the text 'Bathroom horror? Let's change that!' and 'Diane in Denmark' at the bottom.

We’re making our homes clean, cosy, and hygge – one small step at a time. A few minutes here and there make a huge difference. Need a quick win to get you started? Here we go!

4 simple bathroom tasks:

Wipe down the bathroom mirror, taps (faucet) and sink area – instant sparkle!

Modern bathroom featuring a sleek bathtub with a wooden tray, a shower area with glass walls, and decorative towels.

Clear out one bathroom drawer or shelf (toss old products/empty bottles). If I have gently-used hair products, perfume, bubble bath, body lotions, etc, that I don’t like, I put them in my bag for our next Swap Party.

A pink rubber duck with bubbles on its back, sitting on a wooden tray along with a yellow duck and a brush.

Dust the plants (I have a mixture of real and plastic). Give them a quick shower/water them.

A collection of indoor plants arranged on a gray mat, including a peace lily in a woven basket, a monstera in a pink pot, and two smaller plants.

Wash the bathroom rug/shower curtain and change over the hand towels. If we have any tatty towels, I cut them up and turn them into cleaning rags.

A hand holding a kitchen timer in front of neatly folded towels in a wicker basket.

Pop on some music or body-double with me using one of my bathroom cleaning and decluttering videos!

This is also the time to check your supplies and restock. What are you running low on? Add toilet paper, deodorant, toothpaste, etc to your shopping list. You can also use my Flylady Zone 3 cleaning list if you’re in the mood to do more—but remember, you don’t need to do it all this week. This is an ongoing process!

A cleaning checklist for the bathroom, including tasks for cleaning, restocking, decluttering, and seasonal projects.

At the age of 58, I find I lose concentration more easily these days – mush brain, ha ha! So I always listen to music or an audiobook on my headphones to keep me entertained while working! Do you have difficulty with motivation or tend to procrastinate? Use a timer to get you up and moving. You’ll be surprised at how much you can get done in just 5 or 10 minutes!

A close-up of a timer set to 10 minutes, held in a hand, with cleaning materials and decorative cushions visible in the background.

Let’s make things a little better, one area at a time. Let me know in a comment ONE small thing you can clean or declutter in your bathroom today! Rah, rah, rah – you’ve got this!

And take time for YOU today! What will it be? Trying out a new tea, ten minutes working on a jigsaw puzzle, walking the neighbour’s dog, watching your favourite TV show? This morning I took a cold plunge in my She Shack (our garden shed) and here’s me yesterday, enjoying a quick dip in the sea before work!

A joyful person with short, curly hair wearing round sunglasses and a light blue outfit, seated outdoors with a bright smile, holding their sunglasses and posing for the camera.

Have a wonderful day!

So lovely having you on back on the blog too! After 3 years of you transforming my house keeping routine! This summer the zones went a bit haywire!! 😂🤦‍♀️ once again you are getting me back on track!! ☺️💪🏻

I took time to have a long extended lunch with a friend. It was so good to connect and much needed for both of us, I think. Having that opportunity to take time for myself does recharge me and now I’m ready to take on the rest of the week.

Outside is still like a zone in itself, though getting back to regular zone work. Gave the tub an extra good clean. Helping hubby rebuild a deck in the evenings after work. Good thing I like to work outside😁.

I gave the bathroom floor an extra good clean today. I also enjoyed a lovely cup of tea and watched a favourite tv show 😊

Bonjour Diane, je reprends le train avec toi ! Espérant ne pas tomber cette fois !! Merci pour ton article je file laver mon rideau de douche qui en a bien besoin !!

Hi Diane, for me the zone 3 is my library and my livingroom in the groundfloor. I cleaned the windows there and gave my plants a shower. I’m so glad having you back on my side😀

I’m getting back into the blog format. Seriously considering leaving socials behind because they’re flooded with toxicity. I find your posts really encouraging and motivating. Thank you.

Yes, I agree with Sarah. Your updates makes my day!

I work late today. But I know I will have 15 minutes to make the four simple bathroom tasks. And I will feel so content afterwards. 👌 Thank you!

Hello Diane!! My youngest girly throughly cleaned the bathroom yesterday. It smelled so nice! 😁 I think I shall reorganize under the sink today. I love opening the doors and seeing everything in its place 🙌🏼 😌 Hope your day is good!!

So happy to read your blog! My garden is going great guns with produce so my indoor time is limited but I’m putting on my timer and going to clean the bathroom tub. For self-care I plan on relaxing outdoors by our pool (it’s going to be 90 deg F today)and swim some laps.
Have a wonderful day!

It is so nice having a clean and tidy bath! I am going to do a quick swish and swipe and then check for any supplies that I need to restock! 🛁

Love that you are blogging again! I don’t always have the opportunity to view a video, but can always take a couple of minutes to read something (on a break at work or waiting for an appointment). Something about reading is much more calming.

I‘ll zone clean in the kitchen today, as I really have to clean the surfaces and under the sink. Also need to do 1 upkeep task (I spread the upkeep cleaning tasks over the course of the week). Will need some body doubling today, as motivation is low batteries 😌

Susan from Boston, MA. I am loving your blog and the trimmed down version of duties. I have a reminder on for your videos. “Rah, rah, rah”!🤣

Great to see you back nudging us along one task at a time. It’s crazy the thought of getting started but 10 minutes later a whole different mindset. We have A level results on Thursday and we go on holiday on Sunday so things are still out of routine and the bathrooms may get more of a swish and swipe than a deep clean 😂

Woo hoo, you are back 👏
I made a start, set the timer
Cleaned the floor, the bench & washed the bathroom mat, made such a difference and inspired me to do more today!
Thank you for your inspiration xx

So we (with my DH ) cleaned out and organized all meds and first aid supplies! 👏Then moved onto cologne/perfumes, dental supplies, soap/shampoo/conditioners supplies! Now I am clearing out old cosmetics and organizing those tomorrow!🎉👏🤩

So nice to read your blog. I like it that you are stepping a bit back from FB and Insta. I learned the tip to listen to audiobooks while doing household chores from you and it has made such a difference! Listening to entertaining books (also taking up some of your suggestions ;-)) while doing LoL is a game changer. Thank you!

Hi Diane. It’s great to see you back, you really brighten up my day! I enjoyed your blog and cleaned the bathroom along with your video today. 😍🎉💐

I love how you make bathroom cleaning feel simple, cozy, and even enjoyable! Your step-by-step approach and encouraging energy are so motivating

Afternoon Diane

As soon as I saw your post I went to the bathroom and put a 15 min timer on – got loads done too. Thank you. I am taking my house back 15 minutes at a time!
