Evening Reset Routine: Start Tomorrow Calm, Organised and Full of Hygge!

Do you ever wake up feeling like you’re already behind before the day has even begun? Let’s fix that! We’re getting back into our routines this week and I’m focusing on my Flylady Evening Routine — it’s the magic that makes my mornings run smoothly!

A clean kitchen sink with two stainless steel basins, a decorative dish towel hanging on a bar, and a bottle of cleaning supplies beside a lit candle and a vase of flowers.

In the Flylady system, the Evening Routine or Evening Reset is one of our main habits and I can honestly say it’s the one that has made the biggest difference for me. When I’ve taken a little time to prep the night before, I can jump straight into work the next morning, no faffing about. Or jump on my bike for a sea swim with my Besties – more about that later in this post!

A well-organized kitchen sink area with two stainless steel basins, a modern faucet, and cleaning supplies neatly arranged nearby. A window offers a view of the outdoors, adding natural light to the space.

My clothes are set out (usually hanging on the back of our bedroom door), my gym or swimming bag is ready, the kitchen is calm… It’s such a simple thing, but it changes everything. No last minute panic or stress. Of course, I don’t always FEEL like doing my Evening Routine. Some evenings I’m exhausted and just want to collapse on the sofa as soon as we’ve eaten dinner. But I’ve learned that I don’t have to WANT to do the evening reset, I just have to GET IT DONE. I thank myself in the morning!

A white vase holding vibrant pink flowers sits on a surface near a lit candle, with greenery visible outside a window.

My reset routine includes setting up the coffee machine on a timer, so it’s ready when we awake. Simple pleasures!

Just a few minutes in the evening is the best gift you can give yourself for the next day!

A checklist for a good evening routine, including tasks like making dinner, wiping tables, checking the calendar, and preparing items for tomorrow.

If you need ideas (and a little bit of my Danish hygge encouragement), have a look at my video “Diane in Denmark – Stop Wasting Your Evenings”. The aim of having a simple evening routine or reset is to free up your evening, so you can fully enjoy it, guilt free!

Oh, and talking of jumping on my bike… Photos from my pre-work dip here in sunny Copenhagen this morning with my Besties, Vibeke and Helene.

We are having a mini heatwave, temperatures expected to reach 28c / 82f again today!

So, will you join me in giving your Evening Routine or Reset a wee bit of extra love this week? What could you do differently to make tomorrow morning feel calmer and less rushed? Can you add a little hygge — perhaps lighting a candle while you get ready for bed, placing a fresh bloom by your sink or playing some good tunes when the family help you clean up the kitchen? Pop your ideas in the comments and let’s cheer each other on as we make our Evening Routine a habit and not a chore!

Lovely to hear from you Diane, and how lovely you and the besties look! Same heatwave here in London and I cannot wait until it is over. I am so looking forward to the cooler weather! But I really wanted to thank you for telling us that we don’t have to WANT to do something but just to GET IT DONE. It carries me through the day! Sending much love x.

My must-do evening tasks are: restocking the diaper bag, checking the calendar, picking out clothes, and checking outside for toys/strollers/drying racks that got left out. Maybe I will add a little hygge by spending a minute in the garden after this last step!

Thank you for these blog posts! Like others, I am no longer on Facebook or Instagram and don’t always want to watch a video. These posts are a delight. xx

I’m going to make sure I have my water bottles all ready for the morning tomorrow and all the dishes done soon after dinner. I’m not sure about the Hygge but I’ll find some!

Adding hygge into my routines helps to remind me that I am caring for myself in a kind & loving way. It feels like giving myself a hug.

Like many others, I would now much rather read a blog post than visit Instagram or Facebook. Thank you so much for the constant inspiration, dear Diane!

Thank for the inspiration, Diane. Despite the heat, I’ve put the kitchen to bed and the coffee pot is set for the morning. I’m going to relax with a cool drink and a magazine and enjoy the organised space I have made 😊

Hi Diane!

I was so glad to hear over on YouTube that you were updating regularly on here! I’d given up on Facebook and Instagram YEARS ago— deleted both in 2021!

I’m so inspired by your content and have shared it with many friends. I’m happy to now know I can come here and see what you’re up to, be motivated, and not have all the clutter of other types of social media!

Sometimes I’ll say out loud to myself “like Diane says, you don’t have to want to do it, you just need to do It!” I prep lunch, clothes, do a PUPA, and make sure the kitchen is tidy. Simple but life changing.

Hello sweet Diane! I have to be honest. I can NOT get into a nightly routine of cleaning my kitchen 😔 I do all the things that SHOULD make it happen, but I just don’t follow through!! I will for a night or two, then I fall off the wagon. I’m going to keep trying! Maybe some day it will stick. 😆

I love your ideas for adding some hygge to my evening routine. So I have added cleaners with fall scents , especially pumpkin spice always makes me feel warm and cozy.

Having things ready to go for the next day helps me follow through because it’s ready to go and my brain makes less excuses 🙃 I also like to make a list of things to remember for the next day before I go to sleep – it seems to just calm my thoughts and give me some relief of not trying to remember something for tomorrow.

I have your voice saying “PUPA – Pick Up and Put Away” in my mind when I do my evening reset: kitchen, PUPA, look at calendar and prepare tomorrow’s outfit/bag. There’s a big storm in NYC this so I’ll add a touch of hygge with a candle. Thanks for the daily habits inspiration, Diane!

It’s still winter here in Southern Queensland and we start the day around 1c where I live. I’m not looking forward to summer as our temperatures often get up to 35c.
Enjoy the rest of spring and stay cool xx

Hi Diane I’m loving you blog posts and your swim venue looks absolutely beautiful, you all look so happy. I have started to adopt your evening routine, im generally pretty organised in as much as laying out my clothes for work and running gear the night before but waste a lot of time putting away the crockery on the draining board washed the night before, so now I make sure I clear everything away even if I’m too tired and don’t really feel like it. It definitely saves me a few precious minutes in the mornings, thank you for the inspiration 😀
