Good afternoon from Copenhagen! Friday is here, the weekend is on the horizon and, as always, I’m wrapping up the week with my usual Flylady Morning Routine, coaching work and a refreshing dip in the sea. If your week has felt a bit scattered, today I’m sharing how a simple Friday reset helps me feel calm, organised and ready to enjoy the weekend here in Denmark. Just a couple of minutes and not much effort involved — it really does make a big difference. Get the kids involved too: it’s a great reset routine for the whole family!

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know that I swim in the sea here in Copenhagen year-round (come rain or shine, snow, sleet or ice). It’s my favourite form of self-care and keeps me grounded, especially when life feels busy. And, yes, that IS snow on the ground in these photos, ha ha!

Warming up afterwards with a hot cuppa tea (or cold glass of water) and chat with one of my friends is great therapy!

Now, what helps make this daily swim habit easy (or any sports habit, or getting to school or the office on time) is having my bags always ready to go. My hammam towels, china cup for tea (which I transport in a Tupperware box for safety) and plastic water cup, flip flops — all packed and checked regularly. That’s where Flylady’s Friday Focus comes in.

Friday – Clean Out Your Purse, Car… or Bicycle Basket!
In the Flylady system, the first part of Friday’s focus is a quick tidy of your handbag and car. What’s in your handbag? Are you carrying around a lot of unnecessary junk? Store receipts, snack wrappers, and all those random bits and bobs – I always end up with three or four lipsticks in there and a snotty hanky! What about your car? Are there empty water bottles or beach towels in there? Anything which doesn’t belong in the car and needs to go back into the house? Do it now! And remember to fill up the tank with fuel the next time you are out and about. Taking a few minutes to tidy the car is such a tiny task. But it makes a big difference in how you feel heading into the weekend! And it means you are always prepared for next time…

Here in Denmark, we don’t rely much on the car — most of my errands and swims are done by bike. So I check my bicycle basket and pannier bags, and double-check that my lights are working. If it’s winter where you are, check your car to make sure you have blankets, snow shovel, ice scrapers, extra snacks, etc, ready.

The Flyady Friday focus is a little habit that keeps clutter from building up and means we’re not scrambling around looking for things when we’d rather be out enjoying life. Like heading down to the sea for my next swim!

If you have kids, get them into the habit of emptying their school bags, backpacks and sports bags at the end of the school week. My two kids (now 25 and 23) always did this when they were small — there’s nearly always a dirty sports shirt, stray water bottle or uneaten packed lunch lurking at the bottom of a schoolbag! If your kids are already on summer break, best to go and check those bags now rather than discovering it on the morning they go back to school, ha ha! A quick check on a Friday saves hassle (and weird smells) later. Have toddlers or a baby? Give the stroller or pram a quick tidy out too.

The other part of Flylady’s Friday Daily Focus is Date Night. Now, that doesn’t mean you have to go out (or spend lots of money, said the Canny Scot!) or even have a partner. It’s really just about doing something nice for yourself or spending some intentional time with loved ones. When our kids were small, I always put together a family snack basket for the weekend – a wee treat for us to look forward to. These days, I still keep up the habit, just with a smaller basket for hubby and me. Simple things that make Friday feel a bit more special! (FYI We don’t eat everything in the basket, we often carry it over to the following week.) You could also do a basket with healthy snacks or fruit.

Wishing you a calm, clutter-free Friday and a brilliant weekend ahead. Remember: it doesn’t have to be perfect, just a little better than yesterday.
