I’ve already shown you the terribly high-tech, all singing, all dancing Danish libraries where you’re (literally – boom boom!) allowed to climb on the bookshelves, haven’t I? If you missed that post, it’s here…‘Where are we?’ Wednesday
But the other week I popped in to another local library as they were the only branch who had a book that DS10 needed the same day. Normally we’d just go online and order it to be sent to our nearest library…they send them for free from all over the Danish kingdom. This particular bibliotek (library) is a quaint little place with a white fence, a courtyard with a few tables and chairs and trailing plants…
Inside, it was like walking into a time machine…like stepping into one of those mobile libraries that used to drive round our area in Edinburgh. Oh, how I loved that van, it was one of the highlights of my week!
I found the book that DS10 needed and decided to have a quick look around. There were all the usual magazines and newspapers, Miffy DVDs, gardening books, doctor and nurse romances and, of course, the obligatory computers for use by patrons. There was also a cosy little corner complete with sofa, cushions and an old battered writing desk…
Above the desk there was a sign that said ‘MΓ₯ vi byde pΓ₯ en kop kaffe eller te’ (May we offer you a cup of coffee or tea?)
And who can resist when the (Earl Grey) tea bags are so daintily presented on an old glass cakestand which is placed on top of a crocheted doily?
I didn’t see any biscuits… But, then again, who wants to find crumbs in between the covers of their library books? π
Have a wonderful Wednesday – with plenty of heavy reading and light refreshments! π
I am SO jealous!!
Libraries here in the US are highly dependent on where they are– I think they are run mostly by the towns or cities, or in a certain "region" of a particular state. (Remember, the countries of Europe are about the same size of many of our states)
I'm heading to the library that we use later on today, so try to take some photos for you! π
Our library has no coffee or tea unless it's a special occassion and you were invited. ((0.o))
The children's section has plants and stuffed animals and looks really "secret garden" but last time we were there we got yelled at for touching the animals.
WHY PUT THEM THERE IF THE KIDS CAN'T TOUCH THEM????
Our old library's children's section had little chairs and love seats and tons of stuffed animals and the kids could grab an animal and flop in a chair and read all they wanted.
Here we felt like villains. π We haven't been back since. (How rude.)
We went to our library today! I never thought to take pics though! It is quite high tech – there is a mind-reading machine that tells you what book you are going to take out before you have chosen it! Well not quite but it is a smart fandangled thing with a scanner, and the one for returning the books is nearly as exciting as the recycling bottle machine at our supermarket – it has a conveyor belt and eats the books and dvds and spits out a receipt! (The bottle machine is better because you get to hear it crunching and crushing!) Happy Wednesday to Denmark from Germany! :o)
Earl Grey in a library? It's official, I have to move to Denmark:)
I want my local library to offer tea! I know I wouldn't drink it, but you know if it was offered!!!
I really love the Danish libraries – you can touch everything, sit on everything and borrow everything! ;D
That's one of the reasons we have such incredibly high income taxes here…but I don't mind, I think it's important that these facilities are freely available to everyone π
