Starting the Gym at 50 Plus – What I Learned After One Year!

Very inspiring. I’m 75 and have been away from the gym for about a year. Head foot surgery a month ago, and so now I’m chomping at the bits to get back into the gym as soon as the doc says I can. Being immobile for a few weeks has seemed like a lifetime and now I really feel soft and out of shape.

Thank you! This was inspiring! I have a problem with my hand and I’ve been trying to find a class where they adapt the movements for me. Now I found one starting in May! Can”t wait!

Brava you, Diane, for making the most out of your gym experience. The neighborhood YMCA* is my happy place, and at 70 years old, I’m still adding weights to the leg press and working to develop speed on the treadmill. It is NEVER too late! And one of my favorite expressions is: If you hate starting over, stop quitting! Just go, have fun, and stay healthy.

As I start this new decade, I want to explore even more new adventures: a fun book club or writers group, another trip to Japan, more time with my sweet grandchildren. I’m still too young to slow down now. Cheers!

*Readers in the US probably know that many health care policies pay the monthly membership fees for seniors to join the Y. It’s a free pass for lifetime fitness! That and my library card make my heart and my wallet sing. 😍

At seventy-one, I’ve been back in the gym for almost two years. My main goal is functional fitness at this point. I have old injuries from my military service along with advanced arthritis. In my late fifties, still working as a civilian, I was morbidly obese and stressed as I worked and helped my elderly parents. At sixty-two, after retiring but still caring for them I lost 100 pounds and worked out at home.

When I returned to the gym I spent the first six months at a seniors gym, as I was a senior with lots of hanging skin and felt embarrassed to enter a ‘real’ gym along with wanting to be safe. I moved to a ‘real’ gym and was interested in senior classes there, but started working with a trainer instead. I work primarily with weights to improve my overall strength and resilience, in exercises that work around my old injuries and bone-on-bone knees. Nobody bats an eye at my hanging skin; we’re all there doing our own thing. I’ll be working out for as long as I’m able. I feel better in my body and my soul.

Diane you always hit the point !
I used to go to the gym but was finding it more and more difficult to stand the loud music in my ears. (Menopausal tinnitus ? )
I switched it for small classes of Pilates instead (8 people max) and that was game changing.
Now… downsizing is also on the menu and in order to prepare our place to be sold, I was wondering what to do with my wedding dress too !!
I can’t wait to hear ideas about that in your next video !

I am doing my physio exercises after breaking my hip, and being careful to not overdo it! It’s been good!

Hi Diane, daily push ups and after 8 weeks my back and neck pain was gone. We are strong girls 🙂
