August Means Laundry! Simplify Your Routine + A Peek at Laundry Life in Croatia

What does your laundry routine look like right now? Happy 1st August! The Flylady habit for this month is all about getting a handle on our laundry. Are you a “one LOL a day” person (LOL = load of laundry, ha ha!) or is “save-it-all-up-and-do-ALL-THE-LOADS” more your kind of thing? I spotted this sign for sale in the charity shop which made me smile. Just recently my friend Sue and I were laughing about getting phone calls about laundry from our grown kids!

A humorous metal sign with laundry care symbols and the text 'Or give it to your mother. She knows how to do it.' displayed in a charity shop window.

When our kids still lived at home, we did one load of laundry a day, often two. Bedding, sports kit, swimming towels, work shirts, there was a lot going in our baskets! Now that it’s just me and hubby, I do one small stage of laundry every single day (that could be putting in a load, folding yesterday’s load, ironing shirts, mending small holes, putting laundry away). I had tried waiting until I had enough laundry to do a full load with all the steps but kept I forgetting (post-menopausal mush brain) because there was no set routine. So, in my case, doing one part of my laundry routine every single day works best. I never forget, I’m on autopilot as soon as I get up in the morning. And it takes no more than 5-10 minutes daily! However you do laundry, the key is to make it work for you. That will depend on family members, your stage of life, electricity and water costs, your energy levels, your access to machines. Here’s a short video on how I’ve simplified our laundry system over the years — nothing fancy, just practical, real-life routines. Simplify, work smarter!

And while we’re on the topic…we’ve just come back from a family trip to Croatia (my blogpost with lots of lovely photos from Split is here). I’m always charmed by laundry hanging from balconies – one of my favourite things to spot on holiday! Real life on display – I love it!

We don’t have a tumble dryer and I line dry everything (in the garden, weather permitting, otherwise inside), so I always feel an affinity when I see other people’s laundry!

I only wish we had as much sun and heat here in Copenhagen…my LOLs would be dry in minutes, ha ha!

When I was hanging out our own laundry at the apartment in Split, I would spot the local cat having a nap on top of the sheds below! Cute kitty!

I love a daily lol. And I now keep ironing board and iron close at hand, only takes a couple minutes if done right away….learned the hard way after ironing a large quantity all at once! I like hanging to dry outside except little bugs and spiders like it too.

We recently switched to a smaller front loading machine, much more efficient. It also helps me to stay on top of laundry with one small to medium load a day. There is something very satisfying about the laundry process. It’s a task that has a complete start and end. Love your photos Diane!

Diane, I just finished my afternoon LOL. You instilled the LOL each day into me. Before that I had a weekend of laundry that I dreaded. Now that it I’m an empty nester, I do something laundry related each day. Life changing!

We have always been a 2 person household. We both worked full time and worked on our master degrees part time. We each do our own laundry. Only my socks go in the dryer, everything else is hung up, but outside clotheslines are not permitted. They get hung in the guest shower. The household laundry is done not on my laundry days, although I am the one doing it. Those go in the dryer. Sometimes it is divided up, others it is all on one day. Depends on how I am feeling.

Hi Diane! You are the angel that God sent me in answer to my prayers for a better life! Thank you for your precious advice! I have washed my car yesterday ( Daily focus task for Friday) , for the first time in my life! I never thought I would have time to do such a thing before! You make the most boring things look fun and give priceless advice on things that nobody tells you! It’s so true what you say about life! We cannot enjoy the beautiful things without mastering the boring things! With love from Norway!

Thanks to you I have a LOL every day. It has become a routine and I love it, even though I live alone.
I also iron weekly my sons polo shirts and shirts.
