8 December 2015

Welcome, once again, to my Danish Christmas Advent Calendar! Every day I’ll be giving you a little peak into how our family celebrates Christmas here in Copenhagen.

Do the Danes love Christmas? Um, yes – they even use the word Christmas as a verb… Vi juler! (We are ‘christmasing’!) So get comfy, put your feet up, grab a cup of something warm, and prepare for an avalanche of hygge!

What are the best dressed tables going to be wearing this Christmas? Every year, Georg Jensen/Royal Copenhagen (the royal Danish purveyors of fine china and jewelry) invites several well known VIPs to come into their flagship store on Strøget (the main pedestrian street, bang in the centre of Copenhagen) and decorate tables using their choice of china, cutlery, glass etc.  Going to see the tables has become a real outing for all the old ladies and gents of Copenhagen.  And me – ho, ho! Be aware that at some points during the afternoon, you will be queuing to get a look… I went their with my BFFs last night – at around 6.30pm – and we were lucky to have the place to ourself. No need for jostling this year! 🙂

What can you expect? Well, they are always weird and wonderful. Not always very ‘christmassy’. Some years the tables have been downright weird and gloomy. This year I enjoyed them. Perhaps to do with the fact that they were all decorated by Danish actors and comedians? Just be aware that the ‘tables’ are never conventional. Some of them feature an ‘out of Africa’ tent (very Karen Blixen) or a four poster bed. Not the kind of places we would ever eat our own Christmas dinner! 😉

  1. It's always interesting – and yes I used to make the trip (not a far walk down Pilestraede) with Mormor. I still enjoy it and the ideas too….thanks for filling me in with this year's ideas.
