My Danish Christmas Advent Calendar – 1 December (Candles)

Welcome to My Danish Christmas Advent Calendar!  Join me every day in opening a new door.  I’ve got a host of goodies to share with you – traditional Danish Christmas recipes, traditions, songs, games, decorations, crafts and landscapes…  So sit back, relax and enjoy!

1 DECEMBER

It’s finally here – the Christmas month!  My kids are delighted because they got to open their chocolate calendars this morning.  (Note to self: buy one for myself next year ‘cos I ♥ that cheap chocolate too!)

We’re starting off my Danish Christmas Advent Calendar with some candles.  After all, what could be more Danish?  First up we have an Advent Candle – et kalenderlys. An essential at the Danish breakfast table in the cold, dark, dark, dark month of December.

It’s a tall candle, marked with the days from 1 to 24.  Personally, I like to buy the ones that come in a glass holder – I find them easier to control.

And then we have our Advent Sunday candle decoration.  Yep, those crazy Danes just can’t get enough of their candles. And, really, who can blame them?  In the month of December it’s dark in these parts from about 3pm.  And doesn’t get light until about 8am. So any kind of light is welcome!  T

Yesterday – Sunday 30 November – was the first Sunday of Advent.  So we lit the first candle – of four – in our Advent decoration.

Next Sunday we’ll light number one and number two.  And so on and so forth…

Don’t forget to check back here tomorrow when we open the next door!

  1. Hi there!

Just discovered your blog (whilst trying to learn how to pronounce å, æ and ø! Danish is hard!!)…
Trying to learn Danish, but I'm actually from Greenock 😉
So hope you have a great Christmas from here on the sunny west coast (not at all dark, wet, cold and miserable. Honest!) of Scotland!

  2. Hi Math, hope the Danish is going well…at least, it's easier than try to learn Gaelic? 😉

  3. Someone recommended this site to me as I am trying to learn all things Danish. He gave such wonderful stories on the traditions of the holidays in Denmark, so here I am. I am loving those candles, even though I live in the US, I use candles in the winter time all day and night long. Do you know where I can get some of those Danish candles, a web site in Denmark maybe? I am looking forward to seeing the calendar being open every day.
    Thank you!

  4. Hi Sherian! If you can't find a website that will ship the candles, an easy homemade version is to take a tall glass jar or vase, put a large candle inside, and right the numbers on the jar with a marker. Some hobby shops also sell *wax* pens that you can right on candles with… Hope that helps! 🙂

  6. […] Nine sleeps until The Big Day, woop woop! A comforting thought for my kids on these dark, cold school mornings – together with the chocolate advent calendar to open and eat before breakfast.  And me?  I’m happy that we’re keeping up-to-date with our Adventslys! […]
