Scaredy Cat Challenge – 7 February 2010 (Crochet)

Last week’s ‘challenge’ was to try a spot of crochet. I’ve tried knitting a couple of times before. First when I was at school. Though I clearly remember being told off in sewing class for chatting and ‘pretending’ to knit by clicking the needles together. Later as a teenager – probably around the same time I used to hang around the arty, existentialist books at the Chambers Street library in Edinburgh. And again, when I was in my late 20s, had a busy job but thought I should really have a hobby ๐Ÿ˜‰

I have NIL patience (just ask the family) so a sewing machine is my favourite craft companion. Get’s the job done f-a-s-t. But recently I’ve had that ‘surely I can do the needles thing’ feeling again. And all the twister (twitter sister) talk got me a bit fired up. I mean, come on, it’s only ONE needle, for heaven’s sake. I’m a sassy, educated girl (woman, eek!) and have spawned two children. How hard can it be?

So I went down to Hellerup on Tuesday and bought two size 10 crochet hooks and two balls of wool. DD7 and I were going to give it a shot. Here are the results…

A purse. I think ๐Ÿ˜‰ DD7 loved that she was able to sew it together herself.

And a scarf for Doggy.

So I tried crochet and I’m not good at it. It is now out-of-my-system. Though I have to say it has been very cosy in the evening doing a couple of rows while DD7 reads aloud from her Danish school reading book. Are you getting that “Little House on the Prairie” vibe? I did! ๐Ÿ™‚ So maybe I’m not finished with crochet after all?

And if you want more crochet fun, remember to check out http://whatnottocrochet.wordpress.com/ It’s a hoot! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, it’s time to get back to a challenge that really does scare me. A physical one. I’m just praying that the weather gods are going to be kind and remove the snow because this week I am going to attempt to CYCLE to the Next Town. Yes, yes, I know, I know. We live in Denmark where the bike is THE method of transport. But I’ve had a car for the last 21 years and the last time that my only method of transport was two-wheeled was over 30 years ago.

If I’m not back next Sunday, send out a search party! ๐Ÿ˜‰
