Green Friday? Thanksgiving pie in Copenhagen and Flyady hygge Christmas planning mission 30 of 30!

In today’s hygge Newsletter: Thanksgiving pie in Copenhagen, I’m heading off for a few days (yay) plus our final Flylady Christmas Planning Mission – number 30 of 30! Happy Green Friday from Copenhagen (where there are lots of initiatives for people to swap and recycle gifts instead of buying more stuff). Are you ready for our final hygge Christmas planning mission? Make yourself a nice warm cuppa or hot cup of coffee, grab your pen and notebook or Flylady Holiday Control Journal (see the bottom of the Newsletter for a link) and tap below to watch the video. Hygge chat time!

Hygge Christmas planning

Yesterday (Thursday, aka “Little Friday” here in Denmark) I met up with my Bestie, Erika from America to run some errands and we enjoyed a yummy savoury Thanksgiving pie and salad lunch at the American Pie Company. Such a hygge little place in the centre of the city. Lovely pastry with roasted turkey, peas, carrots, celery and onion in a white wine cream sauce with fresh thyme – so good! Erika bought a full size traditional pumpkin pie “to go” to enjoy with her family last night…

And a heads-up that there’ll be radio silence from me the next couple of days because – hooray, hooray – we’re off to visit my dear old Mum in Edinburgh, Scotland! Looking forward to spending time together with our family and to a festive meal in the city. I last saw Mum back in September and I took her out for lunch to her favourite place (where she used to lunch with my Dad), Café Andaluz on George Street. This time we’ll be going out for dinner with the whole family! Another restaurant on George Street but somewhere different for a change – can’t wait!

But back to our planning! Today’s mission completes our first round of hygge Christmas planning. You can find my check-off list here (a Canva template you can modify). But if you didn’t manage to join in with us, don’t worry! We will have Super Missions at the beginning of December and I will be bringing you a full video with every single one!

The Flylady has a FREE workbook which you can download for free here. (Also useful for planning a wedding, Hannukah, baby shower, Ramadan, etc) I show you how to use it in this video…

What are you grateful for? Thursday goals, ice swimming, Hygge Christmas Planning, Flylady mission 29

What are you thankful for today – ice swimming with good friends, time with family, your health, a job you love? No Thanksgiving here in Denmark but sometimes it’s nice to take a little step back and be grateful for all the wonderful people we have in our lives! Today’s hygge Christmas planning mission is a quick wrap and chat. If you are celebrating Thanksgiving, I hope you have a wonderful day – thank you for being such a fantastic support to me over the years…watching videos, commenting on Facebook and Instagram. Rah, rah, rah!

Hygge Christmas planning

Is it cold where you are? Winter is definitely here and it’s been below freezing this past week (I’m breaking the ice on the bird bath daily). Icy on the bathing bridge too but still swimming – sea temp 6c/48f, air freezing. Go us! I am so grateful for my wonderful family and friends – they are my most precious thing!

In general Thursday news, it’s Flylady Errand day but choose day of the week you like. The main principle is to have your lists ready before you head out and STICK to them, ha ha! Lots of festive greenery being sold in our village right now. Amaryllis, small conifers and a “hygge” bag of mixed plants. Hygge is a great marketing ploy! LOL! I’ll be buying some fresh hyacinths next week – I love to have them in our windowsills up to Christmas and they usually bloom over the New Year.

The hygge Christmas planning missions are straightforward and won’t leave you feeling overwhelmed. A little bit each day, and you’ll have a calm and collected holiday season. You can find my check-off list here (a Canva template you can modify). But you don’t need a list to start: watch today’s video above, move your bahookie and start! Just keep moving forward! Our Super Missions start in December…

Happy Monday! Are you in crisis clean mode? Hygge Christmas Flylady mission 26

Good morning from wonderful Copenhagen where the skies are currently grey, grey, grey… Not feeling ready for the week ahead? Take a few deep breaths and relax! I have a plan for you! I woke up feeling a little frazzled but a quick icy plunge in my She-Shack (our garden shed) changed my mood! My sweet friend Polly gifted me a beautiful Skandinavisk candle last week (Snö, the Swedish word for snow, a lovely light scent) and I’ve been enjoying watching it flicker while I sit in my tub! Taking a few moments for ourselves daily is absolutely essential – please don’t skimp on your self-care! For today’s hygge Christmas planning mission we are taking away the overwhelm you might be feeling with the state of your home…

Take a deep breath, grab your Christmas planning notebook and a cup of tea (or chilled water if you’re in the southern hemisphere) and lets go with today’s hygge Christmas planning mission, number 26 of 30!

Hygge Christmas planning

Why am I such a fan of the Flylady system? Because we just tackle things a little at a time. Our weekly upkeep clean stops us getting overwhelmed in the first place. Just 10 minutes (or even 5 minutes) is such a game changer!

Traditional Danish smørrebrød lunch, record rain, Friday goals! Flyady hygge Christmas planning mission 25

In today’s hygge Newsletter! Flyady Christmas planning, a stormy dip in the heaviest rain of the past 150 years plus a delicious traditional smørrebrød lunch to celebrate the birthday of my Bestie, Erika from America! The weekend is on the horizon so let’s dive right in!

Today’s hygge Christmas planning mission – number 25 – has a reminder about our Friday goals… Make yourself a nice warm cuppa or hot cup of coffee, grab your pen and notebook or Flylady Holiday Control Journal (see the bottom of the Newsletter for a link) and tap below to watch the video. Hygge chat time!

Hygge Christmas planning

Yesterday Erika took me out for a delicious lunch to celebrate her birthday (see last Saturday’s post for the photos of her birthday celebrations at our Bluetits Chill Swimmers group). But first, of course, we dipped! Very stormy and it rained all day! I heard on this morning’s radio news it was the most rain in Copenhagen in a single day in the past 150 years. And the equivalent of a whole month of rain, wow! It was a battle to walk out on the bathing jetty. Sea temperature was 6c/42f, air windchill minus -1c/30f! In conditions like these, safety takes priority. So we held on to the steps and dipped, letting the waves crash over us. No swimming. But fun!

But let’s quickly warm up and get cozy again with a delicious Danish frokostplatte (“lunch plate”). A traditional selection of smørrebrød. In Danish lunch restaurants you’ll often be given a long thin piece of paper and a pencil. You fill in your table number and tick the boxes of the dishes you’d like to order. Dishes are served with our ubiquitous Danish ryebread. For lunch I usually eat two or three dishes and we had ordered the plate of three for 179 Danish crowns. I had the fiskefilet (fried fillet of plaice), fresh tuna/avocado/lime salad and the tartare of raw beef (which comes with a raw egg yolk, horseradish, capers red onion, crispy onions, etc). All delicious! Plus a glass of elderflower cordial to drink. Erika chose the fried plaice, frikadeller (traditional Danish pork patties) and fiskefrikadeller (fish cakes). Lots of fish at this restaurant right by the sea and it was very hygge watching the waves crashing in as the rain battered the windows. And you’ll notice the small Danish flag on the restaurant table – another Danish tradition when you’re out for lunch or dinner celebrating a birthday or anniversary!

But back to our planning! The hygge Christmas missions are straightforward and won’t leave you feeling overwhelmed. A little bit each day, and you’ll have a calm and collected holiday season. You can find my check-off list here (a Canva template you can modify). But you don’t need a list to start: watch today’s video, move your bahookie and start! If you miss a day or two, don’t go back. Errand day! Dipping in the dark and hygge Christmas Planning, Flylady mission 24

In today’s hygge Newsletter…Thursday goal reminders, Christmas planning mission number 24 and photos from last night’s magical dip in the dark Danish sea with my American friend Polly! Happy Thursday from stormy Copenhagen! Woke up several times during the night due to rain battering against the windows and there are reports of snow a bit further north than us. Glad I have the winter tyres on the car (see yesterday’s post)! Thursday is Errand Day in Flylady Land but I did mine yesterday. Just pick any day of the week that suits you/your family’s schedule. The aim is to have your list READY so that you don’t forget the essentials. I did a trip to the pet store (cat litter and food for Kiko, my son’s rescue kitten) and IKEA. IKEA sell fresh Christmas trees from the car park: countdown to Christmas has begun! Confession: the IKEA beanie hat wasn’t on my list but I couldn’t resist, ha ha! And it’s practical for the Danish climate – I’ll probably end up wearing it today…

In hygge planning news, I’ve ordered a few festive/seasonal books from the library and am listening to a Christmas cozy mystery on audiobook (free from Overdrive, via our fantastic Danish libraries). And on that note…see today’s video from 5 years ago: I’m in my favourite spot: the crime section of the library! Grab a pen and paper, or your Christmas planning notebook, a hot or cold drink and tap to watch!

Hygge Christmas planning

Are you remembering daily self-care? Last night I did a double dip and sauna with my American friend Polly. Was fantastic to swim in the calm-just-before-last-night’s-storm-sea and sit outside under the stars with tin mugs of hot tea (we use tin mugs because they warm your hands after a cold dip), dark chocolate and a teeny glass of Edinburgh Gin elderflower liqueur! I bought the liqueur last time I was home in Edinburgh, Scotland, and transport the crystal glasses (a wedding gift for hubby and me 25 years ago) by wrapping them in a teatowel and placing them in a tupperware box. What a magical evening – just what the doctor ordered! Sea 9c/48f, air 5c/41f

Umbrella day?! Tuesday goals, Flylady Mission 22, Hygge Christmas Prep 2023

Will you be using your umbrella today?! Happy Tuesday from Copenhagen where it has been raining all night and looks to be the same for the rest of the day! But I’ve had a dip in my plunge pool in our garden shed (my “She Shack”) – there were puddles on the garden path to manoeuver – have finished my Morning Routine and am working in my cozy office. Heading out for a training swim later – that’s why I’m wearing my onesie, ha ha! Tuesdays are Plan and Play focus day in Flylady land (but choose any day of the week that works for you) and Day 22 of our hygge Christmas planning reflects that theme. Today we’re chatting about our lists, self-care and lots more! See below for the my video mission…

Hello, hello, Monday is here! Flylady mission 21

Good morning from wonderful (sunny today) Copenhagen! I hope you slept well and are ready to tackle the week ahead? How did you spend your weekend? My Bestie, Erika from America, celebrated her birthday at our Copenhagen Bluetits swim on Saturday morning (fun photos coming up later in this post). But let’s start with today’s hygge Christmas planning mission! Tap below to watch and get this mission done sometime this week. But why not today? Five minutes on the timer and off you go – rah, rah, rah!

Hygge Christmas planning

And here’s a 60 second video I made yesterday, to give you a little bit of inspiration for this week’s Flylady Zone 3, the bathroom. Four quick tips for making your bathroom hygge! If you compare with the video above, you’ll see that our IKEA towels are over 5 years old and still going strong! LOL!

And now on to the fun photos… My Saturday mornings are spent swimming with my Copenhagen Bluetits Chill Swimmers group – such a lovely bunch of ladies! We celebrated Erika’s birthday (56 years young – Erika and I are the same age!). My friend Carmen (from Australia) brought along some warm-out-of-the-oven-and-still-on-the-baking-tray-sausage-rolls. Yum! One of my favourites! As you know, I’m Scottish and love ANY type of pastie, pie or food topped with or encased in pastry, ha ha!

Some of my friends are dealing with heavy stuff right now and we all agreed that making yourself get out and connect with a friend really makes all the difference. (If you can’t physically get out, make a phone call or send a text.) A much needed respite from all the thoughts tumbling around in your head. Plus a brisk walk in the fresh air or swim in the salty sea will certainly blow the cobwebs away too! Sea temp 10c/50f, sunny but very cold wind.

Copenhagen Bluetits Chill Swimmers

Are you feeling ready for the week ahead? Take a deep breath and relax. Follow the daily focus plan – it takes out the guesswork!

But back to our hygge Christmas planning! The missions are straightforward and won’t leave you feeling overwhelmed. A little bit each day, and you’ll have a calm and collected holiday season. Friday is the day we ..?! A murphy bed in Brussels plus Flyady hygge Christmas planning mission 20!

Coming up in today’s Newsletter! Hygge Christmas Flylady planning mission number 20 and our goals for Friday! Hope you’re enjoying some nice weather today? Vibeke and I had our skinnydip seaswim this morning in the wind and rain…hair-raising fun! LOL! Sea temp today was 10c/50f and the air was 8c/46f

Friday is here and it’s time to wrap up the week and prepare for the weekend ahead. We all need to rest and recharge – whatever that looks like for you and your family! Today’s focus is to spend a few minutes decluttering your handbag and car. Set a timer for 5 minutes and see how much clutter you can find! I’m removing shopping receipts, extra lipsticks (how do I always end up with so many in one handbag?!) and snotty hankies.

Spend a couple of minutes tidying out your handbag/purse

It’s also Date Night – be deliberate and take time to nurture your relationships! Hubby and I like to stay home on Fridays and tonight our kids are coming round for a special dinner (it’s Mortens Aften tonight = St Martin’s Eve). The tradition here is to eat duck!

Oh, and who needs a laugh today? Here’s today’s hygge Christmas planning mission – number 20! It was fun for me to rewatch this video…I was on a trip to Brussels, Belgium, to visit good friends/colleagues (from my days working at the European Supreme Court in Luxembourg in the 1990s) and you can see me making up the murphy bed in my Brussels hotel room! LOL! Did you make YOUR bed this morning?! Go do it! Then make yourself a nice warm cuppa or hot cup of coffee, grab your pen and notebook or Flylady Holiday Control Journal (see the bottom of the Newsletter for a link) and tap below to watch the video. Let’s hygge!

Liberty fabric, clementines, scratch card calendars… What’s on YOUR list? Hygge Christmas Planning, Flylady mission 19

Happy Thursday from dark, wet and windy Copenhagen! Errand Day in Flylady Land but feel free to pick any day of the week that suits you/your family’s schedule. Sometimes I do my Errands at the beginning of the week, sometimes I get things when I am out and about in the city. The main thing is to have your list READY so that you don’t forget the essentials. And also you won’t get carried away buying things that are not on your list – ha ha!

Let’s get straight into today’s pep talk and Flylady hygge planning mission. Grab a pen and paper, or your Christmas planning notebook, a hot or cold drink and tap to watch!

Hygge Christmas planning

Last week I ran a few errands in the city with my Bestie, Erika from America – it was wonderful to be out in the crisp fresh air just before sunset (it’s getting dark by 4.30pm now). We started in the Østerbro part of the city, then walked along the lakes to Nørreport, finishing by Torvehallerne (the Copenhagen Food Halls). The outdoor flower, fruit and vegetable stalls are always a riot of colour – very hygge in the twilight!

Erika bought Liberty fabric for some handmade Christmas projects. Are you making gifts this year, crafting, baking – do you need supplies? Get them ordered or add them to your Errand List – the clock is ticking! I had some non-food items on my Errand List: “scratch off” advent calendars. They cost 50 Danish crowns and I always buy one for hubby, my DS23 (dear son, 23 years old) and DD21 (dear daughter, 21 years old). We never win much but they’re part and parcel of Christmas in Denmark.

These hygge planning missions are straightforward and won’t leave you feeling overwhelmed. A little bit each day, and you’ll have a calm and collected holiday season. You can find my check-off list here (a Canva template you can modify). But you don’t need a list to start: watch today’s video above, move your bahookie and start! Are you having fun? Flylady Mission 17, Hygge Christmas Prep 2023

Happy Tuesday from – again – very wet Copenhagen! It’s Plan and Play day in Flylady land (but choose any day of the week that works for you) and Day 17 of our hygge Christmas planning reflects that theme. Today we’re chatting about Thanksgiving and daily routines. Do you need a pep talk to get you up off your bahookie and moving forward? LOL! I’m your girl! Grab your pen and notebook! Tap below for today’s hygge Christmas planning mission!

Hygge Christmas planning

As you saw in today’s video, we’re not stressing, we are putting one foot in front of the other and focusing on our routines and habits. Tuesday is Plan and Play day. Look at your diary and see what’s coming up, pay bills, make any necessary appointments. Hubby and I are invited to a 50th birthday party this weekend and I’m going to look out my outfit, check the address/how to get there so there’s no last minute panic. Temperatures in Copenhagen have now fallen below 7c/44f so that means it’s time to put winter tyres on our car. I went online this morning and booked an appointment with our local garage for next week. Go me! I’ve also been online and booked my next two haircuts (one before Christmas and one in the New Year). I love that my hairdresser has online booking: makes it so easy and I can avoid making a phone call (do you hate making calls too? Ha ha!) And take a minute today to plan some fun for yourself and your family! If it’s planned, it is more likely to happen!

My friends Erika, Angela and I have arranged an evening swim/sauna in the dark at our bathing club later this week. It’s dark here before 5pm now and actually very hyggelig swiming in the dark… Can’t wait! Angela and Erika have known each other for over 18 years – they met at Baby Group!

A plan to make your week easier!

These missions are straightforward and won’t leave you feeling overwhelmed. A little bit each day, and you’ll have a calm and collected holiday season. Half-way there, how do you feel?! Flylady mission 16

Can you believe today is Mission number 16 – we’re halfway there, woo hoo! But first of all, good morning from rather grey Copenhagen! I do hope you had a wonderful weekend – what did you get up to? Relaxing with the family, working in the garden, looking after grandkids? I went to a crafts and vintage julemarket (Christmas market)…

…organized by my international ladies club, LINK Denmark. All very hygge and I bought a few handmade Christmas gifts. (Will be wrapping them later this week.) Saturday mornings are spent with my Copenhagen Bluetits Chillswimmers ladies. Temperatures are dropping so we are wearing more and more layers! But on to today’s hygge Christmas planning mission. It’s Monday so can you guess what it is?

Tap below for today’s mission and get it done sometime this week! Oh, and who remembers this video from 5 years ago and the old “mother-in-law” joke…I had completely forgotten all about it! Made me laugh this morning!

Hygge Christmas planning

And if you need a little bit of inspiration for this week’s cleaning and decluttering, here’s a 90 second video with my ideas for Flylady Zone 2, the kitchen!

Your weekend goals, Halloween highjinks, Flyady Christmas planning mission 15!

Coming up in today’s Newsletter! Hygge Christmas Flylady planning mission number 15, Halloween coldwater seaswimming highjinks plus a wee reminder (or should that be a kick in the bahookie…) about your weekend Routines! So let’s get straight to it!

First up… Friday’s hygge Christmas planning mission. You know the drill – make yourself a nice warm cuppa or hot cup of coffee, grab your pen and notebook or Flylady Holiday Control Journal (see the bottom of the Newsletter for a link), sit back and be inspired! Tap below to watch the video right now. Let’s hygge!

Hygge Christmas planning

Halloween has been…and gone! We had great fun at our Bluetits Chillswimmers meet on Saturday morning where we dressed up a little (coldwater seaswimming is our chance to go a little crazy EVERY weekend, ha ha!) and had some yummy treats and lots of hot tea in our thermos flasks to warm us up afterwards! It was blowing a gale on Saturday morning, sea temp was 9c/48f and the air much lower due to high winds! Brr!

And I’ve displayed a few spooky decorations in the hall and by the kitchen sink. But today is Friday 3 November – it’s over! So I’m taking down the Halloween decorations, packing them away and eating the last of the Halloween sweets. Go me! Did you or your kids carve pumpkins? What state are they in? Don’t forget about them out on your porch or front step! Take action this weekend!

A plan to simplify your week!

And talking of the weekend… A wee reminder! Just because it’s the weekend, please don’t stop your Routines. You may think “oh, I deserve a little time off”. But do you know what really happens? Saturday or Sunday slips away from us. We don’t get up and moving, we slouch around, unfocused. All those plans we had for the day don’t happen. Instead of enjoying time with friends or family, the day just drifts. And by Monday morning, the small chores are piling up and we are feeling behind. Again! LOL! So do yourself a favour. Day 5 of our Hygge Christmas Prep 2023 Flylady

Happy Friday! How did you get on yesterday, did you add any items to your grocery list? Baking supplies, tape, gift wrap? When we were in Sweden at our summerhouse a couple of weekends ago, I bought quite a few edible gifts at the supermarket. Haven’t wrapped them yet, so that’s my plan for this weekend!

Once again, if you are just joining us here, I’ll give a full recap of Monday’s post with all the details, Christmas planning checklist, etc after this short video! But moving on, tap below to watch today’s video which is a little pep talk about lists and spending!

And a wee reminder that the weekend is on the horizon…time to rest and recharge! I had a fun night out with my friend Kathryn on Wednesday. Dinner in the city (Greek) before the Röyksopp concert. Was brilliant to finally see Röysopp live, I’ve been a fan of theirs since 2001!

Day 4 of our Hygge Christmas Prep 2023 Flylady

Batten down the hatches, we are expecting a mini storm in Denmark tonight… But, whatever the weather, let’s keep things hygge! Day 4 of our early Christmas planning! It’s kind of funny to see myself in beige and grey in today’s video from 5 years ago…I’m so glad my life has become more colourful! (Nothing wrong with those colours, it’s just that they don’t make me feel alive!) Once again, if you are just joining us here, I’ll give a full recap of Monday’s post with all the details, Christmas planning checklist, etc after this short video! Tap to watch – and listen out for a fun fact about Uma Thurman’s Swedish granny!
