Easter break and Family Time

It’s Easter Monday in Denmark and we’re coming to the end of the spring break. We’ve had family visiting with us…look at Kiko, the rescue cat, who feels right at home here!

Danish Easter lunches are always a treat and two essential components are eggs and herring.

We often have the pickled herring topped with egg mayonnaise but yesterday we went with freshly boiled eggs and a dollop of mayo.

Oh, and don’t forget some påskebryg (Easter beer) to wash it all down!

Tarteletter (pastry tarts filled with a creamy sauce of chicken and carrots and peas) are another popular dish at Easter.

You can buy the filling readymade but I like to make it myself.

A close-up of mini tart shells filled with chicken and vegetable filling, garnished with fresh parsley, on a decorative plate.

We’ve also eaten a lot of lamb (minced lamb and leg of lamb) this week. Dessert yesterday was marängsvis which is a Swedish favourite, similar to Eton Mess in the UK. Crushed meringues, a mix of fresh berries (we had raspberries which are my absolute favourite and strawbs) and cream (whipped or poured over). Always hits the spot!

A hand holding a glass dessert bowl filled with strawberries, raspberries, and cream, with a spoon resting on the rim. In the background, a soft-lit living room with a visible sofa and television.

In other news, we’ve been going for walks, reading our books and indulging in an ice cold gin & tonic before dinner. Served in our Edinburgh crystal glasses – which are still going strong from our wedding 28 years ago!

Three crystal glasses filled with tonic water, with a can of Fever-Tree tonic water in the background on a wooden table lit by sunlight.

With a few tasty snacks on the side (olives, crisps, nuts, mature cheese, nuts, etc). The small Edinburgh crystal bowl was my Mum’s. I have two larger bowls (also from our wedding) which I often use for salads and desserts.

And no family break would be complete without a few rounds of Rummikub! Hubby and I used to play this together when we were first dating. We take it on every family holiday and now grown kids have their very own Rummikub sets, ha ha! Do you have a family game that travels with you?

A wooden table with a glass of water, a set of game tiles scattered across the surface, and a plate with snacks. A game board displaying numbered tiles is in the foreground.

Stores and businesses are closed again today, Easter Monday (they were closed Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday) and it really feels lovely that things are sooooo quiet! But will be good to get back into my usual routines tomorrow. Until then, enjoy your day and just keep chilling, wherever you like to hang out…

Lovely photos, Diane. The food looks absolutely amazing and Kiko looks very much at home especially in the last photo 😁

We love Rummikub too here in Australia I’ve had 2 , 14 year old students from Japan staying with us for 2 weeks so out it came and we played most nights

I wish I could be as Zen as Kiko.

We like to play Rummikub during our annual extended family beach trips. Fun after a long day loafing by the water and preparing huge family dinners together. Of course, refreshing G&Ts are also de rigueur. Cheers!

Out family games include 5 Crowns (similar to rummikub), and a customer version of Mexican Train that we call Texas Train (we changed some of the rules to make it move a little faster and to take some of the sting out of having a lot of dominoes left in your hand when someone ‘goes out’).

Lovely photos and wonderful day! I enjoy the cat photos, as one of our young adults has one too, and really is a God-send. Happy Easter!

Nice menu ideas to try! I used to make a chicken potpie but now it’s too much – I am going to make the tarts instead! We went on a mini-break and took our current detective game with us. We also brought our kitty, Oliver! That last photo of Kiko is too cute. I love it when cats drape themselves over edges. 🐣😻💕

Great photos I love Kiko chilling out on the table 😄 your food looks lovely, I do like pickled herring so must try them with the boiled eggs. !

Thankfully our businesses do not close here!! We celebrate many faiths and Easter is a lovely tradition but not mandated by the State… Our family had a glorious Easter brunch at a favorite bistro and enjoyed a concert the night before🩷 And I didn’t have to cook, woo hoo!!🤓 Mother Nature supplied the sunshine and we supplied the fun and frivolity 🌈🥂🌞🐣🥮Elizabeth
