We’re Headed into FlyLady Zone 1: The Entryway, Hall, and Dining Room!

Can you believe it—we’re wrapping up another month and easing into a brand-new Flylady zone, woo hoo! This week, we’re focusing on FlyLady Zone 1: the entrance, hallway, and dining room. These are the first areas we (and our guests!) see when we enter our homes, so let’s give them a little love. But first, a friendly summer reminder…

Summer Mode = Simpler Routines

During the summer, I don’t stress too much about detailed Zone cleaning. Life is busy with celebrations, perhaps a little travel, gardening or outdoor fun with family! So I shift my focus to keeping up with my Weekly Upkeep Clean—just a quick reset of the high-traffic areas. Think: a light vacuum, swish ‘n’ swipe in the bathroom, a quick dust or floor mop. Simple, fast, effective!

Get your kids to work along with you in their rooms! Using a timer for 5 minutes on each task keeps it fun for them.

Did you see my recent video on enjoying summer without stress? I shared FOUR daily habits that help keep your home calm and clutter-free—with almost no effort! These take just a few minutes each but make a huge difference in how relaxed you feel. Watch it here: FOUR Daily Habits for Your BEST Summer | Minimalist Living 2025

But when I do have a moment here or there, I can give some attention to the current Flylady zone—this week, that’s Zone 1.

What’s in FlyLady Zone 1?

Zone 1 includes:

  • The front entrance or entryway
  • Main hallway or landing
  • The dining room (or eating area if it’s separate from your kitchen)
A clean entryway featuring a mop next to a storage bench, with a view of a bright hallway leading to an outdoor area.

Quick Cleaning Tasks in Zone 1 (Pick and Choose!)

Set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes and choose what feels doable:

Entryway Tasks:

  • Shake out your welcome mat or give it a quick vacuum.
  • Wipe down the front door.
  • Declutter shoes, bags, and coats that tend to pile up.
  • Dust light switches/doorframes.

Dining Room Tasks:

  • Clear and wipe the table—add a little hygge, something nice like a candle or flowers!
  • Check the sideboard/buffet for clutter.
  • Dust dining chairs or vacuum under the table.

Small Daily Habits for a Fresh Welcome

Keeping Zone 1 tidy is mostly about little daily resets:

  • Put things away right after coming in the door (PUPA = “pick up and put away”).
  • Set a basket by the stairs or entryway for items going to other rooms.
  • Do a 2-minute “first impression” tidy before guests come over.
  • Open the front door for a minute to air things out—especially lovely on sunny days!

A Wee Word of Encouragement

You’ve already done so much just by showing up with intention. Whether you spend 5 minutes wiping down the door or do a full room reset, you’re doing brilliantly! Let’s give our entrance and dining space a little lift this week—and then head outside to enjoy the sunshine!
