Have you learned a new skill later in life? If not, what’s stopping you? This spring I’ve been on a little secret adventure (I only told a couple of close friends) and thrown myself into the world of DJing!
A few weeks ago I fulfilled a lifelong dream and played my very first DJ set in front of a live audience here in Copenhagen. I’m still on a high, woo hoo!
I absolutely love this crazy new world of beat matching, cue points, looping, FX, spin backs and all the other bits and pieces I’m still trying to get my head around…
It’s definitely been a steep learning curve but I’m proof that old dogs can learn new tricks!
As many of you know, hubby and I are in the middle of selling our house and buying an apartment – exciting but stressful. Having something completely different to focus on has been brilliant for my mental health. It’s a challenge for my brain, tons of fun being creative and, last but not least, somewhere to channel all my nervous energy. After a couple of hours practising, I feel like I’ve had a gym session, ha ha!
My DJ graduation gig was in club in a big hotel right in the centre of Copenhagen. What a night but sooooo nerve-wracking… I played in front of family and friends, ladies from my International Ladies group, fellow students and their friends plus a bunch of random hotel guests. Magic! I managed to keep the dance floor full and my bass was, of course, turned up to Max!
I bought my own mixer so I can practice at home and am slowly building my repertoire of tracks.
And I’m taking more classes so I can learn more tricks. Right now I’m working on my next set (a more chilled lounge/deep house mix).
So if there’s something you’ve always fancied trying, maybe now is the time? You might surprise yourself. If I can do it, you can too!
Just keep dancing!
