Father’s Day lunch at Christianshavn’s Ramparts

This week we celebrated Father’s Day here in Denmark—which always falls on 5 June, the same day as Danish Constitution Day (Grundlovsdag)! It’s a bit of a strange holiday because some schools and offices have the day off, others don’t. Some have a half day. But the stores are closed! The weather in Copenhagen has been very dark and wet this week but that doesn’t hold us back. (Remember to pack a raincoat or umbrella if visiting.) As we say here, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing!

No such thing as bad weather!

But let’s get on with lunch!

Danish smørrebrød – open sandwiches

We ate at a pop-up restaurant on Christianshavn’s Ramparts (Christianshavns Volde). The food was okay, nothing to write home about, but the setting is quirky, the old mill building is from 1669!

We had classic Danish smørrebrød, with locally-brewed beers and rhubarb juice. Usually at lunch you will order one or two pieces of smørrebrød. These portions were quite large so I opted for just one.

I had the prawn smørrebrød, the chicken looked good too.

Afterwards we stretched our legs and took a short walk around the ramparts. Even on a grey, rainy day, Copenhagen is full of charm… An extra excuse to light more candles and turn up the hygge!

As you know, I follow the Flylady system, and this outing was part of my “Plan and Play” focus—taking 15 minutes to sit down, pay bills and look ahead in the calendar. What’s coming up, birthdays or celebrations – do you need to write a card or buy a gift? Don’t forget some fun – we all need something to look forward to! Plan something for you or the family. A walk with a friend, a visit to the garden centre, an online meet-up with family over Zoom. If you don’t plan it, it won’t happen!

That’s all for now – have a marvelous day!

Hugs, Diane
